Heart WeHo’s request to stay open till 4 a.m. heads for vote

Heart WeHo wants the City of West Hollywood to allow it to stay open until 4 a.m., and WeHo residents are encouraged to share their opinions before a decision is made tonight.

The Business License Commission earlier this year was split over whether to allow the bar extended hours of operation on Saturdays and Sundays. After a tie vote, the commission moved to hold another public hearing to review Heart WeHo’s request again, along with additional information they requested from City Hall regarding crime and complaints at the venue. That hearing will be held at 6 p.m. tonight in Council Chambers on the ground floor of the West Hollywood Library building located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.

Heart WeHo, which opened in January 2022 at 8911 Santa Monica Blvd., has already been staying open until 4 a.m. through use of the city’s Special Events Permits. Micky’s and Pavilions are two other businesses that make use of that permit to stay open longer. Neither the Special Events Permit nor the later hours of operation Heart WeHo is applying for would allow the bar to serve alcohol later than 2 a.m.

If approved, Heart WeHo’s later hours would come with stricter security measures, including the mandated use of a metal hand wand detector, having a dedicated security guard for neighborhood patrol, and the establishment covering public safety personnel costs when service calls are made. The bar’s outdoor patio will also shut down at 2 a.m. to minimize noise.

To those who think there are problems when people leave at 2 a.m., and leave a 4 a.m., and who leave at any other time of the day and night: what you are saying is you recognize the City’s financial model of relying mostly on pushing the alcohol drug, day or night, causes more harm than good. No other city relies on alcohol/drug sales (alcohol is classified as a “drug”), as Weho does. We can’t rely on locals supporting businesses, cause our City model is based on helping the destitute, and relying on outsiders to buy our drugs for sale… Read more »

Anyone who doubts the potential benefits of allowing Heart to stay open later should watch the chaos of the crowd leaving The Abbey at closing time on a Friday / Saturday night. Then head over to Micky’s and observe the comparative order of the gradual dispersal of patrons as they leave leave on the same night.

No one is doubting the potential benefits to this one business. It’s the negative impact to the surround neighborhood that is of great concern. We can not rely on code compliance to maintain our quality of life. Doesn’t happen.

Perhaps you should actually read my comment. I literally discussed the positive impact that allowing the business to stay open two hours longer would have on the neighborhood.

No. Having the bars open past 2 does more harm than good in the long term.

Their patio may be closed after 2am but you can rest assured that the doors all along the frontage of their building will be open (and sometimes the back door as it sometimes is) and thus the sound will be blasting AND HEARD into the surrounding neighborhood. And we all know the game that is played with code compliance. They are ineffective when it comes to keeping the bars and clubs in check. NO GOOD FOR the residents that live in the surrounding neighborhood. We already have enough issues with the noise, crowds, vomit, trash..etc. etc. Hoping the BLC does… Read more »

It’s nowhere near any residence, they won’t be serving alcohol, they will be employing people: of course they should be able to stay open. But you gotta love how the City is acknowledging alcohol equals danger and metal wanding. Yet the City Council has no problem approving apparently unlimited liquor licenses. Then when the drunk drivers leave weho and kill someone in some surrounding town, Weho doesn’t get any blame. The City also fails to show any concern for the amount of lives they contribute to ruining with their pushing alcohol as they do. And I believe alcohol is classified… Read more »

Seriously. Walk the neighborhood. There are residences within 500 feet of the business. I know. I live here. I agree with all your other points.

The closest residences, which would be north of Santa Monica Boulevard, are separated by an alley, a parking lot, other businesses, and another alley/streets. Businesses have been in that area since like 1910, so I suspect you knew they were there when you moved there. Let me see if I have this right: are you suggesting West Hollywood close all businesses within 500 feet of residences? That would be about 99% of all businesses in the City. What the City needs to do is get strict about noise ordinances, with real code enforcement, and real high fines with no warnings,… Read more »

Lol. No, never once did I say close all businesses within 500ft of residences. Why do people just make stuff up? Yes, there is an alley way of about 8ft, then a parking lot and a building adjacent to the parking lot. Then all residential buildings. All within 500ft of the business. In a perfect world, code compliance would make sure that people follow the rules. Unfortunately, they don’t do their job well and the city does very little to make them do their job. So we cannot rely on code compliance…at all. There is no good reason to extend… Read more »

Of course not. You don’t want to close ALL of the businesses in the City. You only want to close the ones NEAR YOU. I think I get it now. If you are typical of West Hollywood, you want to have your cake: and eat it too. You want all the glamour, excitement and fun, tax money from the sales of drugs (alcohol and cannabis), so you can have a clear conscious so we can provide lots of free housing to the worthless people who contribute nothing to the city or society. But you just don’t want any noise around… Read more »

If West Hollywood really wanted to be ahead of the curve, they would remove the Target of Debauchery from their identity. Drugs, Alcohol, Cannabis and raucous clubs that attract bad actors. Should be hip to advocate for a safe and peaceful community to live and work. That is actually exciting for the evolved adult. Vegas is a short flight away and are set up for all the nonsense plus you have the benefit of being out of town. What happens in Vegas satays in Vegas.WeHo doesn’t need miscreants from across California to continually disrupt out city even if the City… Read more »

I just think Weho should look closer to what our neighbor city to the West looks like: Beverly Hills. People want want to spend the money to live in the most desirable part of town, who can afford to live here, who can afford to shop and spend money here, and who aren’t a drain on things. Plus, people who value true safety with a solid police force, rather than the so-called “woke” ideology of thinking like Sepi that you can save the world by welcoming the destitute to ruin the city for the people who actually want to enjoy… Read more »

There are a lot of wonderful things about living here. It’s just a shame that the horrible decisions that have been made in the last fews years by our “leaders” are destroying what was once a fabulous place to live …and have fun.
