WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - Thick smoke could be seen for miles after fire crews say construction equipment demolishing a defunct Pella window company building in West Bloomfield started a raging debris fire on Tuesday morning.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene at 10 a.m. where fire crews worked a large blaze that sent up heavy black smoke in the area of Haggarty, just south of Walnut Lake Road.

'There's a lot or was, I should say, a lot of heavy black smoke at the old Pella window company." Langton said. The building was not in use at the time of the blaze and was in the middle of being demolished for future expansion.

West Bloomfield Fire Marshal, Brian Turnquest said there are no injuries and no damage since the building was already in the process of being torn down.

"Most likely it was caused by the heavy equipment that was scraping across the concrete and ignited some of the debris and the debris was close to the building and spread to the adjacent building," Turnquest told Langton.

Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes as West Bloomfield police are on site and blocking traffic at Haggerty.

Fire crews also remain on scene as they continue to ensure the blaze, including any hot spots, are fully extinguished.
