California’s Record-Breaking Sea Levels Swamp Newport Beach Streets (Video)

Southern California's ocean just rewrote the record books. And in Newport Beach, the consequences are spilling across the streets. On Tuesday, October 27, the NOAA tide gauge at San Pedro reached approximately 8.18 feet, surpassing a century-old monitoring station's previous record of 7.93 feet from 2005. Farther south, the National Weather Service called La Jolla's 7.98-foot reading "a preliminary all time record at this site." Santa Barbara also registered record water levels.

King tides inundate streets and flood homes and businesses along both US coasts

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — King tides have inundated parts of both U.S. coasts, flooding streets and sending seawater into homes and businesses in beach communities in California, Florida and the Carolinas. The tides began with the full moon earlier this week and could cause flooding in some areas into the weekend, forecasters said. King tides are caused by the gravitational pull and alignments of the Earth, moon, and sun. They can occur several times a year and last several days. This week's king tides have been exacerbated by additional factors, forecasters said Wednesday. In Florida, strong high pressure to the north and low pressure over the Caribbean were causing increased swells, Chris Fisher, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Miami, said. Along the California coast, the ongoing super El Niño has warmed the ocean, leading to an increased volume of seawater. Another factor was the occurrence of Kelvin waves , a series of pulses of warm water that lift the sea level, said Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the weather service's Bay Area forecast office in Monterey. This week's king tides, like their name, have definitely been noticeable. Residents didn't need a beach to see the ocean. The ocean

King tides, which started with the full moon earlier this week, also flooded streets and sent seawater into homes in Florida and the Carolinas, reports the AP. In California, tide gauges logged unprecedented readings, including a prelimi...

Southern California King Tides could disrupt Thanksgiving coastal travel

King tides broke records along the Southern California coast this week, and forecasters say the next round, due Thanksgiving week, could push the water even higher. On Oct. 27, the tide gauge at San Pedro in Los Angeles Harbor reached about 8.18 feet, the highest since record keeping began there in 1923. Newport Beach hit 8.4 feet, and seawater shut down Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach. There was no hurricane and no major storm. The ocean just came up.
