Weirton residents have addressed concerns of speeders on Starvaggi Drive, a problem they said has gotten worse since the pool opened just a couple of weeks ago.
"I’m just worried about, you know, the pool’s open now, the kids walking you know across the parking lot,” resident David Hood said. “I walk on the sidewalk, and other people walk on the sidewalk, you know, afraid they'll lose control of their car and might hit somebody. "
Hood has lived on Stravaggi Drive for 20 years and said the issue of drivers speeding has been an ongoing problem that typically gets worse in the summer.
It’s an issue that law enforcement officials are aware of and advise the public to take seriously as they ramp up patrols in popular speeding areas.
"Anytime we get a speeding complaint within the city of Weirton we try to hit that area,” Weirton Police Chief Charlie Kush said. “We have grants that allow us to do speed patrols. We've done multiple speed patrols over the last several months."
Weirton officials acknowledged the issue on Stravaggi Drive by recently putting up a speed trap. They said the process of putting in a more permanent solution such as a speedbump is an option but believe the public can still avoid the safety concerns by obeying posted speed limits.
"For people to keep in mind that they are driving through neighborhoods where there are children and traffic, so if people would just slow down and obey the speed limit that would cut down on accidents and any chance of anybody getting hurt,” Kush said.
Councilman Terry Weigel said council is aware of the issue and addressed the concerns of putting in a speed bump, as that now goes to the next phase of the traffic commission.
