MSP Airport expanding TSA security reservation system to Terminal 1

MSP Airport has announced plans to expand its security line reservation program to include Terminal 1.

MSP RESERVE is a free security line reservation program already available in Terminal 2 that allows travelers to schedule a time to pass through the TSA line before boarding their flight.

Jeff Lea with The Metropolitan Airports Commission says it was just a matter of time before the program made its way to Terminal 1.

"Obviously Terminal 1 is much bigger and there are more airlines, and so it took a little bit of coordination to try and get it here to Terminal 1 in an expanded effort," Lea says. "And that's debuting here this week."

MSP RESERVE began as a pilot program at MSP Terminal 2 in May of last year and has logged over 50,000 reservations in its first year.

Lea says now that the program is up and running at both terminals, travelers should expect shorter lines while waiting to pass through the TSA checkpoint.

"At Terminal 1, that MSP RESERVE line is gonna be at the north checkpoint," he explains. "It's less used than the south. And so we hope that certainly more people will use the MSP RESERVE and it balances out, so it might help fluctuate some of the line levels across the board."

It's not connected to TSA Precheck or Clear, although the latter is helping to run the program at MSP and seven other airports across the country. There are also a handful in Canada and Europe as well.

When you have a reservation, you'll get a QR confirmation code sent to your phone, which you scan at a designated security checkpoint to enter a special lane, taking you to the front of the general security line. Reservations are available starting Tuesday for all flights between 3:45 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. At Terminal 2, it's available 3:45 - 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Checkpoint 1.
