Deputies ID suspect in shooting of Walterboro girl; child remains in ICU

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Detectives in Colleton County are searching for a man connected to the shooting of a 9-year-old girl .

Deputies responded to a home off Buffalo Lane in Walterboro shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday where witnesses said an outside argument between two adults resulted in shots fired.

A bullet entered a home a struck the child. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in ICU, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives identified Brian Brookes Jr. as the suspect. They said he has an active warrant for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

“Detectives are diligently working to locate him. The case is ongoing and additional charges are expected.”
