A young man by the name of Martin Beckwith, a Wayland native, serves aboard a U.S. Navy warship in Japan.
The American Connections Media Outreach and the Navy Office of Community Outreach shared with News Channel 3 that Beckwith serves as an engineman aboard the USS Green Bay.
Beckwith graduated Wayland Union High School in 2022 and joined the Navy 10 months ago, according to the Navy Office of Community Outreach.
“I joined the Navy to see the world and for both the education and economic benefits,” Beckwith said.
Beckwith serves in Japan as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces, according to the Navy Office.
These types of Naval Forces operate with allies to protect and preserve the open Indo-Pacific region, which is the largest responsibility by the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

“Following the footsteps of my grandfather and continuing the legacy of military service my family is a great source of pride,” said Beckwith. “I would like to thank my parents for supporting my decision to join the military."
The USS Green Bay is an amphibious warship that transports a variety of resources for missions, according to the Navy Office.
