A deadly crash occurred on the morning of March 21, 2023, on northbound SR-17 south of El Rancho Drive. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident happened at around 6 a.m., when officers responded to a call reporting the crash.The driver of the vehicle was only identified as a 73-year-old Watsonville woman who was driving a 2003 Acura RSX on northbound SR-17, approaching El Rancho Drive at the time of the crash. For reasons unknown, the Acura veered off the roadway and collided with a metal pole, ultimately overturning, the CHP reported. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the driver sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by medical personnel. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the CHP, who have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
