Coach of the Year

Baldwinsville coach Jamie Cuyler. Provided photo

Name: Jamie Cuyler

School: Baldwinsville

Years coaching: 27 years (first year coaching golf)

What person (or event) inspired you to become a coach? I was blessed to have a few coaches when I grew up that helped me develop my coaching philosophy in Hannibal. Ken Avery, Dom Pike, Renee Blais and Pete Rossi really showed me how to connect with student-athletes on a different level. That coaching is more than just teaching the sport. They genuinely cared about their kids and created a sense of family on the team. We always took care of each other. I try to carry that selflessness into my coaching.

What do you enjoy most about coaching and why? Obviously, the relationships and time you spend with the kids, But I also enjoy the preparation and strategy. I enjoy looking at an opponent, or in this case the golf course, and strategizing how to get the kids to score well. Where to be aggressive and where you need to be more conservative to minimize mistakes. I am an average golfer at best. People always have this misconception that you need to be amazing at something to coach or teach it. It’s like they feel like they need to show their “expertise.” The funny thing is, the coach’s score doesn’t count! It’s about getting that 16-17-year kid to believe in themselves. That’s what matters!

If you could hang out with any fictional character, who would you choose and why? I’d have to say Ol’ Man Jenkins. People that know me will understand ...

What is the one song on your playlist that you would be embarrassed if anyone found out? “Unbelievable” by EMF
