Kieghtan Rank pitched a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as Lakeside’s softball team edged visiting Waterloo 1-0 in nonconference play on Monday.

Emma Smulders singled to lead off the Lakeside third, taking second on Rank’s single. Smulders reached third on Abby Meis’ well-placed sacrifice bunt and scored the game’s lone run on Keyanna Rank’s hit to the left side of the infield.

Kieghtan Rank navigated around doubles by Brenna Huebner in the first and sixth innings, retiring six consecutive to end it for the Warriors (6-6).

Kooper Killmon went 2-for-3 with a double for Lakeside.

“We had a great game with Waterloo,” Lakeside softball coach Matt Doering said. “On the defensive side, we were able to scatter hits and strand runners with a combination of solid pitching and defense.

“In the third inning, we had great execution to put a run up and they made it stand up. That’s two solid wins in a row for the girls. I’m proud of the growth they are showing as the year goes on.”

Ally Schaumann took the loss for the Pirates (10-6).

    THURSDAY’S RESULTS

POYNETTE — Being a young team in a rugged league hasn’t always been kind to the Warriors this season.

But after a lopsided result in the first game of a twin bill, Lakeside secured its biggest win to date.

Lakeside Lutheran’s softball team earned a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Poynette on the heels of a 16-1 defeat in Capitol North softball on Thursday, April 25.

“This should be a great memory for the girls,” Lakeside softball coach Matt Doering said. “It was a phenomenal win for them. Winning at Poynette is always tough and I am really proud of how they bounced back in game 2.”

The opener belonged to the Pumas, who got three home runs and eight RBIs off the bat of shortstop Grace Gavinski. Poynette banged out 15 hits, six of which including two homers by Gavinski, came in a nine-run sixth.

The Warriors (5-6, 1-4 in conference) quickly regrouped for the finale, scoring the go-ahead run on Emma Smulders’ sacrifice fly in the ninth. Caitlyn Lloyd, who led off the frame with a single, taking second on an errant throw and reaching third on Molly Muchka’s sacrifice bunt, scored the big run.

Lakeside starter Kieghtan Rank worked a scoreless ninth, which featured a 2-3 double play, to earn the complete-game decision. She struck out 11 and walked none, allowing three earned on seven hits while throwing 117 pitches, 87 for strikes.

It was a pitcher’s duel until the sixth when Lakeside’s Kooper Killmon clutched up with a two-out two-run single into center field to break a scoreless tie. Muchka singled with one away in the seventh and scored when Smulders followed with a base knock up the gut.

The Pumas (9-3, 3-2) took advantage of two RBI doubles and a passed ball to tie it in the seventh, stranding the winning run at second base.

“The second game was an absolute gem,” Doering said. “It was a battle from start to finish. Kieghtan and Kassidy McCaffery both were throwing really well. We strung together a number of really good at bats with two outs.”
