I-90 vehicle fire slows Tuesday evening commute

Update: Traffic came to a crawl during the evening commute along Interstate 90 Tuesday due to a vehicle fire.

Just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters from the Belle Valley Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a reported vehicle fire near exit 29, just west of the Lake Pleasant Road overpass in the eastbound lanes of I-90.

According to reports from the scene, when crews arrived they found an SUV with flames coming from under the vehicle and from under the hood. Crews applied foam to help extinguish the fire.

Eastbound traffic on I-90 was limited to the passing lane only as crews worked to put out the fire.

The interstate was fully reopened just before 6 p.m. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.

Traffic is currently backed up from the Route 19 (Waterford/Peach Street) exit to the Route 97 (Waterford/State Street) exit.

I-90 is closed to traffic from the Route 97 (Waterford/State Street) exit to the Route 8 (Hammett/Parade Street) exit.
