Parents of Waterbury teen in hit-and-run speak out on driver who had multiple drinks before incident

Bryan Calle's parents in Ecuador spoke via Zoom about their thoughts on the driver who was drunk. Bryan has been intubated, sedated and breathing from a ventilator.

WATERBURY, Conn. — The Waterbury teen who police said was hit by a car one week ago is still fighting for his life at CT Children's Medical Center.

His parents have been granted visas to come to the United States for their son.

"They’re hoping for a miracle," said Ioannis Kaloides, attorney of the family.

For the past week, Bryan Calle, 17 of Waterbury has been intubated, sedated and breathing from a ventilator.

Calle's cousin shared a cell phone video with FOX61 of him in the hospital. His injuries ranged from skull fractures to a brain bleed to liver lacerations.

"Overnight, he did show signs of improvement. The prognosis is still very poor," added Kaloidis.

Doctors told Calle's parent's several medical procedures cannot be done without their physical approval.

His parents told FOX61 on Zoom they were finally granted the visas.

"I’m a little happy with all the help that we got to get our visa so we can go there to see our son," said Rosa Calle, mother of Bryan.

The family set up a GoFundMe page with over $14,000 raised so far.

The driver, John Egan, 58, of Waterbury turned himself in Wednesday evening and faced several charges.

He was the former chairman of the Waterbury Zoning Commission.

The arrest warrant stated Egan ordered multiple drinks at Verdi, a restaurant and bar on a golf course.

Egan then went to The Cave which was another bar and also ordered beers there as well.

"The level’s alarming, the amount is concerning but those facts are what they are," added Kaloidis.

Calle's father said he does not hold any anger toward Egan.

"I don’t have hate for him. On the contrary, I would like to see him one day and tell him that Jesus is the way and I’m here to give you my hand and a hug," said Segundo Calle, father of Bryan.

At the same time, he believed had Egan chosen to stop, his son would be in better shape.

"If that moment if he would’ve just called the police, that would’ve made a minute or two difference and that would’ve been crucial for the doctors to help my son," added Segundo Calle.

His parents said they are expected to arrive in Connecticut Sunday morning.

Kaloidis said he expects to also have another update on that day.
