Crews Battle Multi-Alarm Fire at Abandoned Waterbury Factory

David Lepore

Fire crews responded to a large fire in an abandoned mill in Waterbury Saturday night.

The fire broke out in an abandoned factory on Water Street around 8 p.m., according to fire officials.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, including heat exhaustion, officials said.

Some nearby structures were evacuated as a precaution, but the fire did not spread from the original building.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the EPA were called in to monitor for any contaminants inside the factory.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene overnight to check for hot spots.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
