Italian and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner beat American Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the U.S. Open men's final on Sunday, securing his second major title of his career.

Sinner faced little resistance from Fritz in the first two sets, controlling the baseline rallies with his groundstrokes and pouncing on the American's serve. Fritz battled back in the third set, eventually securing a break of serve, and was serving for the set until the Italian held steady and secured the title by a match score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

Sinner's win comes after the revelation that he tested positive for a banned substance twice earlier in the year, which the International Tennis Integrity Agency announced on Aug. 20, opting not to pursue a suspension after it found his explanation "credible." Sinner said the steroid, clostebol, entered his body after a staff member applied a spray containing it to an open wound.

Fritz was trying to become the first American man to win a major title in over 20 years. The last American man to win a major was Andy Roddick in 2003, when he won the U.S. Open.
