A Washington, D.C. man was found guilty of assault and other charges stemming from the non-fatal shooting of his former romantic partner, who was pregnant at the time, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Federal prosecutors said Joshua Hemphill, 32, went to his former partner's apartment in a fit of rage the morning of Sept. 21, 2018. They said he fired a round into the door and then made his way inside the home. Once inside, he chased his ex-partner and another woman into a small closet, firing more shots into the closet at close range, prosecutors said.

His ex-partner, who was 24-weeks-pregnant at the time, required emergency surgery after the shooting. She and the child survived, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Hemphill was arrested in Pennsylvania weeks later. After the arrest, a judge ordered Hemphill to stay away and have no contact with the woman, but prosecutors said he violated that order multiple times between Oct. 24, 2018, and April 29, 2019.

A jury on Wednesday found Hemphill guilty of two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault while armed, first-degree burglary while armed, multiple counts of contempt and other gun offenses.

His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 11, 2023.
