Eligible rideshare and food delivery drivers can receive free dashcams as part of a safety initiative to keep workers safe from crime in D.C.
On Wednesday, DoorDash announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with D.C. and a $500,000 investment in the city's Private Security Camera Incentive Program to fund private cameras in the vehicles of rideshare or food delivery drivers. This program will allow those who are working with companies such as Lyft, Uber and DoorDash to get a private security camera installed in their vehicles.
"So for drivers who come to restaurants...to pick up orders, drop off dinners and we want them to be able to do that with more security," D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.
The city's Private Security Camera Incentive Program has already spearheaded the installation of over 26,000 cameras at various homes and businesses in the District. This new initiative for rideshare and food delivery drivers will mirror the Private Security Camera Incentive Program's protocol of participation.
Bowser said the program has even helped law enforcement with investigation efforts as the city's crime numbers continue to climb.
"What our partners of law enforcement tell us, is that video evidence is crucial in solving crimes and closing cases and also deterring crimes," Bowser added. "...so this is about using every tool at our disposal."
The city expects to get these dashcams out to eligible drivers in the same fashion as the Wheel Lock Program the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) hosted in February. Drivers will soon be able to pick cams up at designated locations.
