Washington, D.C. has surpassed 100 homicides so far this year, according to information from the Metropolitan Police Department.
This is the earliest D.C. has reached 100 homicides since 2003, according to new statistics. The District recorded 85 homicides over the same time period in 2022; this year, there is a 15% rise in homicides compared to last year.
On Tuesday, MPD officers investigated two fatal shootings.
In one incident, authorities said they were looking for the gunman who shot and killed a man at a gas station on South Capitol Street in Southeast near Livingston Road. A lookout was issued for a black two-door Honda with tinted windows.
In another incident, a woman was killed and a man was injured in a shooting at the 1200 block of 49th Street in Northeast, police said.
No arrests have been made in either shooting as of Tuesday night.
Just hours before the shootings, Mayor Muriel Bowser spoke with 7News about crime.
“We've had a pretty fulsome discussion about how we are not only focused on the police, but the entire government in supporting families and young people, but also making sure the whole system is working to hold people violent and committing crimes in our city accountable.“
Gregg Pemberton, chairman of the D.C. Police Union, is pointing the finger at city leaders.
Pemberton wrote in a statement:
The council’s actions have had a chilling effect on professional and responsible policing and caused over 1,200 police officers to leave the agency.
