As a result, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and District Department of Environment issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for D.C.
The Code Orange Alert means that the air pollution concentrations within the region could become unhealthy for some people with elevated health risks. That includes children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases and the elderly.

The effects of poor air quality can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise and people are encouraged to use limited electricity and fuel use.
