Spelling Bee results: Dev Shah wins 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee with correct spelling of 'psammophile'

After a long week, the Scripps National Spelling Bee ended Thursday night with Dev Shah coming out on top.

The Florida native weaved through words such as "aegragus," "rommack," and "tolsester" before eventually winning on "psammophile," or an organism that thrives in sandy areas.

Shah outlasted runner-up Charlotte Walsh, who cruised through several rounds before tripping on "daviely."

It looked like it might shape up to be a late night in Washington D.C., but Round 12 cut down three spellers while Round 13 cut the field in half from four to two. There were beginning to be murmurs of a spell-off for the second year in a row on the broadcast, but Shah's cool mentality ultimately prevailed.
