In an exclusive interview, eyewitness Kiara tells 7News about the horrifying moments she witnessed, when a woman at an apartment building in Southeast D.C. lit a car on fire, while a man, woman and two children were inside.
“She put whatever she put in that cup, she lit that cigarette upstairs, she walked down those stairs and walked to that car just as calmly as you and I are having a conversation and she watched that man burn. She stood there as if this was a show.”
Kiara took video circulating on social media she sent to 7News, that shows flames shooting out of a car, and fire crews working to put out the blaze.
She says she knows the man inside the car and tried to save his life.
“I ran into the building and called 911 and grabbed the fire extinguisher he was literally on fire from his head to his waist, like literally lit up!" Kiara said.
That man is still fighting for his life. The woman is expected to survive and the two kids inside the car were not hurt.
Kiara tells me she believes this happened because of a fight over money.
“It is disgusting. It is past disgusting. My daughter is three and she did not see him, but she saw the fire, she should not have had to see that,” Kiara said.
Southeast resident Nae Wells lives close-by. She says her daughter goes to daycare right across the street.
“This is unbelievable honestly that this happened righty next to my daughter’s school I have never heard of someone lighting a car on fire with children inside. This is ridiculous,” Wells said.
DC Police say 49-year-old Diane Williams was arrested and is now charged with assault with intent to kill. The victim is still in critical condition at the hospital.
"I have had nightmares all night and I mean I don’t think that you can imagine seeing a 6-foot man on fire ... not in a movie, falling on a hill and then trying to muster up words to talk," Kiara said.
