WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department said two men were hurt Thursday afternoon after one was shot and the other was stabbed near a Metro station in Southeast.

MPD said it happened in the 1100 block of Howard Rd. SE around 4:35 p.m.

Chief Robert Contee said at a news conference that two men got into a fight on a Circulator bus, which is operated by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). The fight carried over onto the street. Contee said one of the men stabbed the other.

Someone who witnessed the fight flagged down a Metro Transit police officer who was at the Anacostia Metro Station. Contee said the MTPD officer tried to break up the fight and told the man with the knife to drop it. The man didn’t, and the officer fired once, hitting the man.

Medics took the men to the hospital for treatment. Police expected both to survive.
