The Hope Kiwanis Club heard from Phoebe Bailey, Director of the Southwest Arkansas Education Coop in Hope on May 6th. Bailey talked about the LEARNS act recently passed by the legislature. She explained some of the components and how the state is working to clarify the act. She also noted the act is controversial to some and has spawned some lawsuits. Bailey said at the coop they are working to implement the provisions of the act and should there be a court decision that reverses the act, they’ll deal with that situation if it happens. The club found the program very helpful in explaining some of the changes that will come with the act’s implementation.

A short, lovely ceremony was held by the Hempstead County Democratic Party Tuesday (6-6) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Virginia Clinton Kelly, mother of President Bill Clinton. The ceremony was held at Kelly’s gravesite in Rose Hill cemetery. Dr. Linda Clark voiced the opening prayer and offered short remarks about Kelly’s life and her devotion and support of her son. Local minister and JP Jessie Henry offered remarks and Margaret Ross delivered a short, appropriate poem. Retired Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Jim Gunter voiced the closing prayer.

Howard County had its first official farmer’s market of the season at its pavilion in Nashville, AR across from the USDA building. The market started at 7 am on Friday and ran until 10:30. Vendors included Salinas farm, Fern Michaels, Plants and String, Mike of Many Hats, Tim White and Jerry Wenta.

The Farmer’s Market was held at the HUB on Tuesday June 6th. There were 14 vendors and this week for the first time of the season the Terry Kirkpatrick had blueberries. While the radishes seemed done there were string beans as well as colorful cauliflower besides the potatoes, squashes and usual items. One vendor had dog treats. For the best selection it is recommended to get there early.

Hope’s own Mae Estes took home the Arkansas Country Music Association’s “Female Vocalist of the Year” for a third year in a row in Monday night’s (6-5) annual awards ceremony in Conway. Estes also was on the program as well. She has produced an impressive body of work in both writing and recording and made her debut on the Grand Old Opry earlier this year. She is a graduate of Hope High and currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee where she pursues a full-time career in music.

EMMET – While it’s a few days early, Emmet will host its 2nd Annual 4th of July Celebration on July 1. There will be live music, food trucks, vendor booths, face painting, children’s slide and fireworks, along with gifts for first responders. The event will again take place at the former Emmet school.

EMMET – Emmet’s Vision Association (EVA) held its second Bingo tournament of the year. The purpose was to raise money for the Second Annual Fourth of July Celebration. Money raised will to toward paying for a band, the fireworks show and attractions for children, such as face painting. There will also be vendor booths with plenty of food at the celebration.

ROSSTON – It was supposed to begin at 2 p.m., however, people began showing up much earlier for the Rosston Volunteer Fire Department’s BBQ fundraiser Saturday. In fact, volunteers hadn’t finished setting everything up before people started arriving for the BBQ brisket, pork and chicken, along with cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, green beans and corn, not to mention a table full of desserts.

PRESCOTT – Three different groups are working together to host a job fair Thursday, June 15 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The fair will be held in the Potlatch Building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. While the fair is primarily to assist displaced workers from Holcim, it is open to anyone looking for a job or hoping to improve their station with a better job. Those groups are: Arkansas Division of Workforce Services, Southwest Arkansas Planning and Development District and the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office.

PRESCOTT – In an effort to provide a positive experience for youngsters of the community, Ivory Curry will be hosting a series of fun days throughout the summer. The first was held Tuesday, June 6, at Curry’s Community Outreach. Children were able to come, watch a movie, enjoy hot dogs and chips, and play video games in the game truck. Curry said with school out young people need something to do, so he’s trying to add an event for them making sure it’s in a safe, positive environment.
