Umatilla County Sheriff's Office deputies rescued a woman from the Walla Walla River.
On May 21, around 3:30 p.m., UCSO deputies received a call reporting a woman had been swept away in the current of the Walla Walla River near Harris Park, about 14 miles southeast of Milton-Freewater.
Milton-Freewater Fire Department and deputies responded to the area.
While deputies were en-route, they received an update that the woman had made it to the bank in some bushes but was still in extreme danger with the current moving very fast.
Upon arrival, Deputy Walker surveyed the location of the woman and the dangerous conditions of the water. The deputy found individuals attempting to rescue the woman.
Deputy Walker retrieved a climbing rope from his vehicle and the woman wrapped it around her body. Deputy Walker, Milton-Freewater Fire Department personnel, and the citizen then attempted to pull her from the water safely. UCSO Sgt. Roberts retrieved a backboard to pull her up out of the water.
Several of the rescuers then assisted with carrying the woman to a cot and then she was loaded onto Lifeflight, which had landed at Harris Park.
An additional woman, who had also gone into the water attempting to rescue her, was treated by medics on the scene.
