Look Back ... to steam supplanted by diesel, 1949
June 8, 1949, in The Star: There will be no more soot, smoke or dust at the Southern Railway shops in Anniston or on the routes between here and Birmingham and other places in the region. That’s because at 7 a.m. today diesel replaced steam as the trains’ basic locomotive power. The big black steam engines will be taken off to the Birmingham shops to be either used elsewhere or scrapped. Of course, mechanical differences between the two technologies are massive, bringing about a savings in time, money and labor. The old steam engines had to be sent to the shops at the end of every eight-hour shift for fueling and oiling, whereas the new diesels require no oil and visit the maintenance shops only once every three days.
