KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Extra security will be in place at Knightdale High School on Friday after a threat posted to social media.

The threat is just the latest in a string of threats to Wake County Public Schools in the past few months.

Although the threat was thought to be not credible, any kind of threat at a school is reason for concern and has to be taken seriously, which is why there will be additional police officers on campus.

Keith Richardson, the school's principal, said law enforcement was called in after a social media threat. Staff don’t believe it’s credible and warned making threats is a criminal offense.

"Please know that posting threats on social media is a serious offense," Richardson wrote. "Anyone caught doing so could face criminal charges in addition to disciplinary action in accordance with WCPSS policy."

Dozens of schools have received threats since school started in the fall.

Local and state leaders are working to find solutions to crack down on threats against schools.

Friday is an early release day, so students will get to leave earlier than usual.

WRAL News posted a list of threats that have occurred at schools in our area since November. More than 20 threats to schools were reported in February alone.
