A fire, apparently started in a garage, burned a home in Vista Tuesday evening.

The fire was reported around 4:45 p.m. at the home on Eucalyptus Avenue near Alta Vista Drive, according to witnesses.

The owner Bill Sherwood and a friend were inside when the blaze broke out. He said he heard a loud boom and then ran downstairs to his garage, according to neighbor and veteran photojournalist Don Bartletti.

"Obviously there was an explosion in the garage," Sherwood said. "I peeked in. I could see some flames over by the refrigerator, and a lot of smoke starting to billow. I scrambled. I found a hose. I started spraying at it, but it got so bad so quick it singed the hair on my head and arms."

Sherwood said the flames grew intense, and a propane tank exploded. He also said there were other flammable materials in the garage, such as paint cans, WD-40 canisters and lithium batteries in his e-bikes, according to Bartletti.

“I moved here in 2000. I’m retired. Now it looks like I’ll have to get a job," Sherwood told Bartletti.

The fire was contained to the home. No one was injured, Bartletti said.
