Another veteran officer from the Metropolitan Police Department has been killed in a motorcycle crash.
The agency announced that Second District Officer Nelson Casillas, an eight-year veteran of the department, was involved in a serious crash in Virginia and died from his injuries on Wednesday, June 7.
The 31-year-old was heading north on a 2007 Honda CBR1000 RR motorcycle at a high rate of speed, when he cut through the gore area of the exit ramp and struck an impact attenuator around 1 p.m. near Exit 156 for Dale City, Virginia State Police said.
Casillas was thrown from the bike, as debris from his motorcycle struck the back of a northbound 2015 Hyundai SUV in the right exit lane.
Casillas, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene. The drive of the Hyundai was not injured.
Casillas' death comes weeks after DC Police Sgt. Jin Park , an 11-year veteran of the department, was killed in a motorcycle crash while on his way home from a shift.
