RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Several pieces of legislation, including one sponsored by an area delegate, have now been signed into law.

Governor Glenn Youngkin signed the bills to help Virginians with developmental disabilities and their families get the support and tools they need to be able to succeed on Monday.

“The bills I'm signing today will improve the lives of so many Virginians, including those with developmental disabilities, who contribute so much to the culture and success of our vibrant Commonwealth,” said Youngkin. “We must continue to strive to equip our students with the skills to compete and education is such an important part of that process.”

House Bill 1963, sponsored by Delegate Chris Runion (R-25th), calls on the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services to take steps to amend the Family and Individual Supports, Community Living, and Building Independence waivers so that people with developmental disabilities who are receiving such services can have greater financial flexibility. It also required the department to report on its progress by Dec. 1.

The Senate version of this bill, Senate Bill 945, was sponsored by state Senator David Suetterlein (R-19th).

Youngkin also signed HB 1555, sponsored by Delegate Emily Brewer (R-64th), requiring public high schools to identify on their website the faculty member who is responsible for special education transition planning and coordination at each school.

Suetterlein again sponsored the Senate version of this bill, SB 943.

Finally, Youngkin signed SB 1430, sponsored by Suetterlein, which requires the state Department of Education to convene a stakeholder work group that will make recommendations on reducing barriers to and improving the access to paid work-based learning experiences for English language learner students.
