Jenny’s Kitchen: Balsmic Vinaigrette
The pass was open over Hwy. 88, the sun was high in the sky spilling its warmth upon the welcoming earth and it was time to take a drive into Reno to see my daughter, Gina, whom I had not seen since autumn. We have a pact that neither one of us will drive over any pass in the winter. The drive was spectacular! Both Caples Lake and Silver Lake were frozen over with the shiny snow casting a gentle glare as we drove along the edge of the lakes. The granite exposed hillsides had numerous waterfalls trickling over the rocks spilling onto the roadway or other rock formations. The wooded foothills with their aroma of cedar and pine lightly swayed in the breeze casting shadows over the highway resembling a railroad track. And as we descended the pass, this lush scene gave way to tumbleweeds and cactus welcoming us to Nevada. It was a warm afternoon for April, the traffic was surprisingly light and there was no sign of winter anywhere. As we pulled into the Atlantis, my daughter was waiting for us. What a sight for sore eyes! Our hug lasted forever and I covered her faced with mom kisses! She whisked Joaquin and I up to our room, she had treated us to, in the tower section. What a spectacular view of the city! We were famished, so we went downstairs to the Manhattan Deli for a quick bite of lunch before our play. Gina and Joaquin’s pastrami sandwich was spilling over with meat and delicious. I ordered the strawberry salad doused in my favorite Balsamic vinaigrette and it hit the spot. Once lunch was over, we hailed a cab to the El Dorado to see “Menopause the Musical.” I had not ridden in a taxi since I lived in New York in the 70’s. Boy, have things changed! The play was FABULOUS! I laughed and laughed. It was amazing what 4 women could do on a stage with a minimal number of props. And if you like 70s-90’s music this is a play for you. I highly recommend it. After the play it was back to the Atlantis for a little dessert, a little gambling and then a lot of sleep. Day two was a shopping day for sure. Every store you can think of is in Reno. And the offerings of eateries are numerous. I felt like a kid in a candy store! I will say I got my fill of both… shopping and eating. I think my favorite meal was at “Nick the Greeks.” I ordered a BOWL with jasmine rice at the bottom, chopped romaine lettuce over that with chunks of cucumber, red onion rings and tomato, and piles of sliced lamb and beef over that with lots of tzatziki sauce and warmed pita! I was in heaven! The next morning was good-bye and an empty heart and sad face, yet grateful for the wonderful time we had with beautiful Gina. I am already planning our next trip!
Reno horses competing with housing developers over habitat
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A new housing development has Reno horses competing for habitat. You can lead a horse to water..... and for hundreds of years that’s exactly why wild mustangs have been coming to Steamboat Creek. That is, until about a week ago when a housing development in Damonte Ranch put in a new fence line, keeping the horses from reaching the water. Watching the horses struggle to find their way around the fence has created public outcry. Tania Tavcar, a longtime resident and wild horse advocate, explains that the fence is doing more than just keeping the horses from water.
