2 dead in Vernon Hills apartment fire: Police

VERNON HILLS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An overnight apartment in Vernon Hills has left two people dead.

Police said fire crews were alerted at around 3:15 a.m. by a fire alarm coming from a multi-unit apartment complex in the 900 block of S. Court of Shorewood.

A 9-1-1 call reported people possibly trapped, and, upon responding, firefighters found what they described as “heavy fire conditions.”

Crews were able to search the building and discovered two adult victims still inside. One was dead at the scene. The second later died at Advocate Condell Medical Center. Police said the identities are unknown at this time.

Crews extinguished the fire, however the entire building is uninhabitable. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents find temporary housing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
