Public Art Vermilion, a program of Main Street Vermilion, is sponsoring its “Be Yourself [Everyone Else is Already Taken]” community public art project, according to a news release.

Inspired by a quote from playwright Oscar Wilde, the project will kickoff at 3 p.m., April 1, at the Community Easter Egg Hunt, at Sherod Park, 13406 W. Lake Road in Vermilion.

Participants are invited to create a simple, quick and fun thumbprint drawing of themselves, according to the release.

“The goal is to get more than 3,000 drawings,” said Marilou Suszko, chairperson of Public Art Vermilion, in the release. “No two drawings will be the same because they begin with your unique thumbprint.

“It’s just a reminder that everyone is different and it’s good to be yourself.”

All ages are invited to participate and art supplies will be provided.

The drawings will be collected and mounted on a large traveling format for future display, the release said.

Following the kickoff, the project will continue at Main Street Vermilion, 685 Main St.

People are urged to stop in from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and create a drawing.

“This art project will come together over time, maybe weeks or even months, before it will be released for public viewing,” Suszko continued in the release. “You can follow the progress on Main Street Vermilion’s Facebook page or Instagram.

“If you would like to get your family, friends, neighbors, book club, business, service organization, classroom or any group to be part of this project, call Main Street at 440-963-0772 and let us know. We’ll provide all the materials with instructions on how to participate.”

Public Art Vermilion’s award-winning Postcard Project is installed at 15 locations throughout Vermilion, according to the release.

Walking tour guides are available at the Main Street office.
