Student arrested after gun found inside locked vehicle at Canton High School
CANTON, Texas — A Canton ISD student was taken to the Van Zandt County Jail after a gun was found in their locked vehicle at the high school. Superintendent Brian Nichols said when officers were talking to the student, they said a gun was in their locked vehicle. No one was in any danger and no threats were made.
Most NE Texas counties keep bans on outdoor burning in place
Commerce and some other parts of Northeast Texas received heavy rainfall Sunday night, but bans on outdoor burning remain in effect for most of the region. Collin, Fannin, Hunt, Rockwall, Kaufman, Van Zandt, and Wood counties are among those with bans on outdoor burning still in place. data released last week by the federal drought monitoring collaborative showed most of Northeast Texas as being in severe drought conditions. SHREVEPORT, LA - A road rage incident on I-20 in northeast Texas leaves a Louisiana woman dead. The incident happened earlier this week in Van Zandt County. 31-year-old Caitlin Elizabeth of Baton Rouge was shot and killed while she was a passenger in a car on the interstate. Deputies believe a truck driver opened fire on the car Elizabeth was in. She was hit in the face and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ben Wheeler man killed in motorcycle/truck crash in Van Zandt County
VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A Ben Wheeler man is dead after a crash on Saturday in Van Zandt County. According to a Texas DPS report, Roy Lewis Woods, 58, of Ben Wheeler, was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle west on FM 279 three miles west of Edom around 4:32 p.m. on Saturday. Karla Kay Coyle, 63, of Brownsboro, was driving a Ford F-150 east. According to the report, Woods failed to negotiate a curve and struck Coyle’s truck in the eastbound lane.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to affect southeastern Kaufman, Van Zandt, northern Henderson, and Rains Counties until 2:30 AM CDT. Doppler radar at 1:58 AM CDT detected strong thunderstorms moving southeast at a speed of 40 mph. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail. Potential impacts include the knocking down of tree limbs, movement of unsecured objects, and minor damage to outdoor structures. The following locations may be affected: Athens, Gun Barrel City, Canton, Grand Saline, Mabank, Chandler, Van, Malakoff, Tool, Seven Points, Emory, Kemp, Brownsboro, Eustace, Trinidad, Fruitvale, Edom, Grays Prairie, Enchanted Oaks, and Caney City. Motorists should be cautious on Interstate 20 between mile markers 523 and 542. The maximum size of hail is estimated to be 0.25 inches, with maximum wind gusts reaching 50 mph.
