VAN WERT, Ohio (WANE) — The odds of someone getting struck by lightning in their lifetime are 1 in 15,300, according to the National Weather Service.

Unfortunately, a truck in Van Wert, Ohio, could not beat those odds Thursday as surveillance camera footage showed a truck getting struck by lightning.

After a viewer reached out with a photo of the lightning strike, WANE 15 got the chance to meet Jeff Lands, who was in his truck on a break from work when the rare moment happened.

“I was just sitting on my break time, having a cigarette,” said Lands, who has worked at Braun Ambulances in Van Wert for 16 years. “I saw a flash, heard a boom, looked left, looked right, oh, whatever, I went back to my phone. Next thing I know I see smoke coming out of my dashboard.”

Van Wert County Emergency Management reported to the National Weather Service that the incident occurred at 9:35 a.m. on Thursday.

Lands said he wasn’t hurt, but as for the truck — it won’t start.

“It fried everything. It fried it all,” Lands said. The damage isn’t so obvious from the outside, as the truck is still standing.

Lands said he bought two lottery tickets after work that day.
