Phyllis Ann Boehm, the daughter of Phillip and Jessie (Christensen) Boehm, was born January 6, 1940 in Jamestown, ND at Trinity Hospital. Phyllis grew up in Jamestown and attended St. John’s Academy. In 1954, she worked with her mother as an assistant cook at Camp Rokiwan Girls Scout camp in Spiritwood, ND. After her graduation from high school, she worked at F.W. Woolworths as a clerk and later as an assistant bookkeeper. She met Darrell Machtell when he returned from Camp Pendleton in California where he served in the Marine Corp. On February 10, 1962 the couple were married at St. James Catholic Church in Jamestown, ND. They lived in Jamestown for two years and then moved to Mandan, ND. In 1965, the couple moved to Valley City, ND where Phyllis was a stay at home mom raising their three children. As the children began to transition into college, Phyllis decided to work outside the home at The Fair Store in Valley City. Phyllis was a very active member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Parish where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, was on the Religious Education Board and an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. She and Darrell also served as Ministers of Hospitality at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Phyllis and Darrell loved dancing eventually making square dancing a passion meeting many new friends over the years. Phyllis loved to cook/bake for her family and others. She also had enjoyed fishing, spending much time with her parents in Canada. Her enjoyment for fishing grew to a love for fishing when she came to share this common hobby with her husband spending many hours on Lake Ashtabula. It was rumored she would often catch more fish than Darrell did. Her strategy….to have Darrell bait her hook and take fish off for her. The attention given to her fishing experience by Darrell accentuates the love and patience they shared over their 61 years of marriage.

Phyllis is survived by her husband Darrell, Valley City, ND; three children, Daniel (Pamela) Machtell, Fargo, ND, Nicholas (Rhonda) Machtell, West Fargo, ND and Christine (Steven) Baird, (Eugene, Oregon); six grandchildren, Andrew Machtell, Chantel Machtell, Kaylah Machtell, Taylor Machtell, Tanner (Chelsea) Baird and Codey (Alicia) Baird. Two great grandchildren, Kaiyah and Ezrah who was born hours before her passing.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy (John) Leary and her brother, Thomas Boehm.
