Roundup: Shaver leads Utica softball to tournament upset of Cardington

Hannah Shaver racked up three hits and four RBIs, sparking the Utica softball team Monday in a 10-1 victory at No. 2 Cardington in a Division III district semifinal.

Lauren Schmitt and Lexi Wiegand added two hits and two runs apiece, Kiersten Hull two hits and an RBI and Emily Meyers a hit, a run and an RBI as all four hit doubles for No. 11 Utica (12-11), which plays No. 10 West Jefferson either Friday or Saturday at Pickerington Central. Hull also struck out two in a six-hitter.

Valley cruises

Abbe McNabb doubled, singled and drove in three runs for Licking Valley in a 10-0 victory against visiting No. 15 Hamilton Township in a Division II district semifinal.

McNabb also struck out seven in four one-hit innings for the No. 4 Panthers (19-8), who play No. 1 Granville either Friday or Saturday at Pickerington Central. Addison Justice added a triple, a run and three RBIs, D’Neya Dennis two hits, a run and two RBIs and Taylor Penick and Chloe Cooperider two hits and a run apiece.

Heath falls on road

Shelby Moore had a hit and an RBI for Heath in a 5-1 loss at No. 2 Jonathan Alder in a Division II district semifinal.

Moore also struck out four and allowed five hits for the No. 12 Bulldogs (15-11). Kylie Green added a double and a single.

BASEBALL

Johnstown wins late

Anthony Zirille’s walk-off single in the seventh inning lifted Johnstown to a 5-4 victory against visiting No. 16 River Valley in a Division II first-round game.

Zirille totaled three hits and scored a run, and Erik Marohl added two hits and three RBIs and Jacob Myers and Landon Myers a hit and a run apiece for the No. 13 Johnnies (8-17), who visit No. 4 Buckeye Valley on Tuesday. Nash Andrix struck out eight and allowed no earned runs in a four-hitter.

Utica advances

Gavin Tussey went 3 for 3 with a run and two RBIs for Utica in a 29-0 victory against visiting No. 25 Africentric in a Division III first-round game.

Aaron Hays, Elijah Bland and Dylan Cooperider each had two hits and two runs, combining for seven RBIs for No. 8 Utica (12-12), which hosts No. 11 Columbus Academy at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Braxton Fisher and Gavin Chinn combined to strike out 11 in a five-inning no-hitter.

Northridge falls on road

Dain LeValley scored on a Braden Yoder single for Northridge's lone run in a 6-1 loss at No. 20 Madison-Plains in a Division III first-round game.

LeValley and Yoder recorded two hits apiece, and Andrew Shay added a double for the No. 23 Vikings (1-25). Shay also struck out three and allowed no earned runs in four innings of relief.

Heights drops road game

Jake Lopinto notched two hits and scored a run for Licking Heights in a 10-2 loss at No. 20 Gahanna in a Division I first-round game.

Grady Stephens added a double and two RBIs, Timo Martin a hit and a run and Joel Busker two hits for the No. 38 Hornets (7-17).

Newark beats Delaware

Austin Rose hit a three-run home run, powering Newark to a 5-2 victory against visiting Delaware.

Bodie Smith added a hit, a run and an RBI, Tyler Flint a hit and two runs and Aidan Hamilton a triple and an RBI for the Wildcats (16-10). Moses Crane struck out one in three scoreless innings of relief.

Heath wins at home

Connor Corbett and Tannar Patterson scored two runs apiece out of the top two spots in the order, combining for three hits and two RBIs, fueling Heath in a 7-2 victory against visiting Mount Vernon.

Kaden Green added two hits and two RBIs and Paul Gould a hit and a run for the Bulldogs (21-2), who are ranked No. 2 in this week’s Division III state coaches poll. Wyatt Binckley struck out six and scattered five hits.

Watkins edged

Cole Massie and Chase Massie each threw two scoreless innings for Watkins Memorial in a 4-3 loss in eight innings at New Albany.

Aydan Guthrie had a hit and an RBI for the Warriors (16-8), and Cole Massie reached base twice.

BOYS LACROSSE

Newark makes history

Drayson Peterson’s overtime goal gave Newark a 6-5 victory at Westerville Central, marking the Wildcats’ first victory against an Ohio Capital Conference-Ohio Division opponent and the program’s single-season record ninth victory.

Peterson had three goals and an assist, Max Frost two goals, Ricky Frazier one goal and Oheneba Asenso an assist for Newark (9-8). The Wildcats host Northmont at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a Division I, Region 3 first-round game.
