Sean "Diddy" Combs is facing federal sex trafficking charges. Hundreds of pagers exploded in an apparent attack against Hezbollah in Lebanon. And are these Bruno Mars and Miley Cyrus songs too similar?
👋 Howdy! Laura Davis here. It’s time for Tuesday’s news!
Music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs was denied bail and must remain in jail on federal charges involving a litany of allegations involving racketeering and sex trafficking, a judge ruled Tuesday. Combs pleaded not guilty to the charges after being arrested Monday in New York City.
Shocking allegations: According to the 14-page indictment, Combs turned his "multi-faceted business empire" into a "criminal enterprise" in which he and his associates committed crimes such as kidnapping, arson, physical violence, sex trafficking and forced labor. 🔎 More from the indictment.
At least eight people were killed and more than 2,700 injured, many of them Lebanon-based Hezbollah fighters, when the handheld pagers they use to communicate exploded, officials said Tuesday.
What we know now: The blasts took place in several suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon's health minister said, and one of the people killed was an 8-year-old girl. The direct cause of the explosions, which appeared to take place simultaneously, was not immediately clear, though Hezbollah quickly placed blame on Israel. 👉 Follow our live coverage.
Donald Trump was pressing ahead in his reelection campaign with a planned town hall Tuesday night in Michigan, days after an apparent second assassination attempt against him. Trump provided effusive praise for the Secret Service agents who apparently thwarted the attempt at his Florida golf course over the weekend. But the agency has also drawn scrutiny for allowing the suspect, armed with a rifle, within a few hundred yards of Trump. The suspect, a vocal supporter of Ukraine, was seen as a liability by some soldiers and volunteers there, a former soldier said. 👉 More new developments.
The lyrics to Miley Cyrus' career-defining hit song "Flowers" are similar to Bruno Mars' tune, "When I Was Your Man." But are they too similar? A lawsuit filed this week by Tempo Music – owner of a share of the "When I Was Your Man" copyright – alleges Cyrus copied elements of Mars' 2013 track for her own song. "'Flowers' duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements of 'When I Was Your Man,'" the lawsuit says. 🎶 See the similarities.
