All-American Sam Buckley talks building off a thunderous volleyball freshman season
While freshman college athletes sparsely play their first year, Sam Buckley isn’t like most. Last year for the women’s volleyball team, Buckley was named All-UAA First Team and UAA Rookie of the Year. She also helped power the team to a 30-6 record and second round appearance in the NCAA tournament. Now in her second year, Buckley helped lead WashU as they swept the competition in the East to West Battle, which included defeating the #2 and #7 ranked Division III teams. During this tournament, she led the team in assists in two games and picked up a double-double (double-digit assists and digs) in the other match. This performance earned her UAA Conference Athlete of the Week. Student Life sat down with Buckley to learn more about the young but accomplished career she has had so far at WashU, as well as who she is off the court.

Trans Am set for World Wide Raceway this weekend
The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli returns to the St. Louis area for the first time in 38 years when the Gateway SpeedTour pulls into World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, just minutes from the famed Gateway Arch. The series raced on the same property in 1985, at what was then called the St. Louis International Raceway, in an event won by two-time Trans Am champion Wally Dallenbach Jr. Until now, it was the most recent Trans Am event held in the St. Louis area. Since 1985, the property has been completely renovated; teams will be taking on a completely different 1.6-mile, eight-turn “Circuit of St. Louis” infield road course built in 1996 within the 1.25-mile oval used by the NASCAR Cup Series and NTT IndyCar Series.
Scouting Report: VCU vs. St. Louis
VCU’s women’s volleyball will face off against Saint Louis University on Sept. 22 in St. Louis, Missouri. The CT Sports staff chose their notable players for this matchup. Kialah Jefferson – The junior outside hitter has been dominating in the lead for kills. She has been the leader for kills the past three games and leader in points two out of the last three games. This season alone, Jefferson has met her season high with 23 kills against California Polytechnic State University, according to VCU athletics. Her ability to kill the ball is nothing new to VCU. Last season, she recorded multiple double-digit kills games, including her final four contests of the season in a row, according to VCU athletics. In the team’s last matchup against James Madison University, she had the most attacks, with 32, according to stat-broadcast. Jefferson is a well-rounded player by attacking and killing the net.
