New research: 20,000 WI residents have lost health coverage since 2025

Healthcare affordability remains a growing concern for Wisconsinites and new data ar giving a more exact picture of how federal cuts have reshaped the insurance landscape over the last year. Research from Protect Our Care showed nearly 20,000 Wisconsinites have lost Medicaid or CHIP coverage since the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was passed last summer. Another 45,000 dropped marketplace coverage after premiums skyrocketed. Rep. Tara Johnson, D-Town of Shelby, said Wisconsin is looking at ways to fill in gaps left by federal measures, including expanding BadgerCare income requirements. "Double the poverty level and somewhere between 55,000 to 75,000 additional Wisconsinites would qualify for BadgerCare," Johnson explained. The proposal could also create a state-run marketplace for small businesses and employee groups. State Democrats introduced a BadgerCare Public Option bill in March but the legislation failed to advance. Lawmakers are looking to reintroduce it during the 2027 session. At a recent Opportunity Wisconsin town hall, residents raised concerns about what losing coverage could mean for families already struggling to pay for care. Rock County Health Department monitors statewide rise in measles

JANESVILLE— With the rising number of measles cases in Wisconsin and recent federal changes to immunization schedules, Rock County officials say their level of concern is low but they are still monitoring the situation. The current measles case count has risen up to 100 since the beginning of August with most of the confirmed cases in Lafayette, Iowa and Grant counties, according to the latest data from Wisconsin’s Department of Health. The data reports that all but one of the confirmed cases has been in unvaccinated people. Bethlehem Solomon, a Public Health Supervisor in the Communicable Disease Unit with the county, said there are still no confirmed measles cases and no known exposures in the county. Still, she said the county is monitoring developments and encouraging residents to make sure they and their children are up to date on vaccinations, particularly as students return to school. Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties currently have active measles cases, while Dane County had cases earlier in the year. Rock County Public Health is receiving regular updates from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and communicating with neighboring counties as appropriate, Solomon said.
