by what he told the arresting police officer maybe he is trying to lay the ground work for a plea of not guilty by reason of mental defect. As I understand in the United Kingdom if you are found guilty of murder by a jury of your peers but not guilty by reason of mental defect once you are deemed to be able to understand what you did was wrong you are required to serve out your original sentence.
