UK baseball’s winning streak ends at 17 in a row, still wins series at Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Al. (FOX 56) – The Kentucky baseball team got off to a 5-0 start to SEC play and held the longest winning streak in the nation at 17 wins in a row, but that streak came to an end with a loss to Alabama, 4-3 on Sunday down in Tuscaloosa.

Wins on Friday and Saturday got the Wildcats their 2nd SEC series victory to begin conference play, and looked for a 2nd straight sweep but fell just short. A homerun from Grant Smith in the 7th gave them a 3-2 lead, but the Crimson Tide responded with two runs in the 8th to go ahead for good.

Zack Lee got the start for the Wildcats and had a strong outing, going 5.1 IP with two runs and two hits allowed, striking out five batters, continuing Kentucky’s strong starting pitching this year.

Kentucky stays on the road on Tuesday to go across the Commonwealth and face Western Kentucky down in Bowling Green. Then the Bat Cats return home for a weekend series against Missouri.
