A Tulsa woman with more than two decades of experience in the house business has a warning before you try any of the cleaning hacks trending on TikTok.
S he says they could cause thousands of dollars in damage — or even put you in the hospital .
Jonna Stogner owns the H ouse C leaners. S he showed me damage she found on a client's granite countertop.
“T his is caused by using products like vinegar, Fabuloso , P inesol , Lysol , Mr. C lean ,” Jonna said.
S he said she's been cleaning house s professionally for about 25 years .
When it comes to cleaning hacks that go viral on TikTok, she’s not a fan.
“I t drives me insane, like it consumes me sometimes, I get very passionate , like , ‘ no, please don't do this ,’ so I just try to educate people as much as I can ,” she said.
I f you read the fine print , many products explain how to use them , but videos trending on TikTok tell you to use toilet bowl cleaner to clean your shower or grout , put laundry soap in the back of your toilet , or mixing it with other products to mop your floors.
Jonna said these TikTok tips are a sure way to ruin houses.
"I f you want to ruin your own it's one thing, ” Jonna said. “ I try to educate people , I' m not rude and condescending , like , ‘ oh my god , you're so stupid ,’ I am actually telling them you cannot mix these cleaners together or you cannot use these on the surfaces , you're going to ruin the people's home .”
Jonna says mixing different cleaning products could damage your plumbing — o r worse.
“I f you mix bleach and ammonia, it creates mustard gas and it's very deadly and it doesn't take a lot .”
J onna says she knows from her own experience cleaning a client's bathroom . A n employee came in with Windex , when she' d just used bleach.
“I spent a week in bed with a burnt esophagus , and now I have to use an inhaler and that was 15 years ago ,” Jonna said. “N ow , I won't even carry anything with ammonia, I'm scared it will spill in my trunk and mix with something, and you know I don't want to take the chance .”
I f you're cleaning your own house , just because a video is trending on TikTok doesn't mean you should try it .
P ay attention to the product labels , don't ever mix bleach and ammonia , and if you hire a cleaning company — ask what products they're using on your shower, your floors, your granite and your appliances.
