Tulsa Drillers announced Friday that the Tulsa Oilers character, Oily the Oiler, will be making a comeback after nearly 50 years.
Oily the Oiler, originally introduced to Tulsa in 1952, was a popular icon for the Tulsa Drillers baseball team.
Drillers General Manager and President Mike Melega said the Tulsa Drillers are thrilled to bring back the baseball character this season.
“Oily was a presence at Tulsa Oilers games and in the community for decades so it only makes sense to welcome him to DrillVille. There is such a deep and wonderful baseball history in Tulsa, and this addition of Oily is another way that we can honor and remember that history," said Melega.
The mascot's reintroduction includes an Oily patch being added to the left sleeve of the Drillers' home white jerseys and a new on-field alternative Oily hat.
Merchandise of Oily will be made throughout the year such as hats, stretch fit, jerseys, and t-shirts.
On Thursday, May 11, the first 1,000 fans to enter ONEOK Field to watch the Drillers play the Springfield Cardinals will receive an Oily bobblehead.
