The Onondaga/LaFayette softball squad kicked off its season on a high note by cruising to a 21-6 win over Tully in an OHSL Patriot American contest on Wednesday.
Onondaga/LaFayette coach Liz Bort was concerned about her players having first-game jitters. It proved to be the complete opposite.
“We showed none of (those jitters) today,” Bort said. “We returned a large core of starters from last year and they went out today and played like the veterans they are.”
Onondaga/LaFayette had a commanding 12-0 lead after three innings. The Black Knights plated six runs in the top of the fourth, but the Tigers piled on nine more to lock up an overwhelming victory.
“This win feels great, and I’m so proud of these kids,” Bort said. “It was a total team win. Every player contributed. To come out after less than two weeks of official practice and win a league game to start the season really feels amazing.”
Layla Isaacs almost hit for the cycle for Onondaga/LaFayette. She also had five runs batted in and scored three times.
“(Layla) had a great first game,” Bort said of her five-year varsity standout. “In her first at-bat, she absolutely roped a triple to the fence. I knew she was locked in. Not only her offense, but her ability to control the game as our catcher is going to be huge for us this year. She’s one of the smartest ballplayers I’ve had the pleasure to coach.”
Also for the Tigers (1-0), Mya Stafford had three hits and drove in two runs. Lilly Coonradt collected a hit, knocked in two runs and scored three. Ellyse Thompson scored four times, had three walks and stole a base. Sophia Hill provided two RBIs and two hits, and Lily Amidon had three runs and walks apiece.
In the circle for Onondaga/LaFayette, Kaidence Cronin pitched a complete game. She struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits.
“Kaidence pitched a great game. Our defense had her back and our bats were hot,” Bort said.
For the Black Knights (0-1), Ella Tordell hit a double and scored a run. Grace McKenna singled and scored as well.
The Tigers host DeRuyter at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Black Knights hit the road to Bishop Ludden this Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Cato-Meridian 5, Weedsport 4
Riley Jones knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Blue Devils to a season-opening win.
“Riley came up with a real big RBI,” Cato-Meridian coach CJ Hannon said.
The game was knotted at 4 through five innings before Jones came through in the clutch for Cato-Meridian. The Blue Devils senior finished with three hits.
Also for Cato-Meridian (1-0), Kaydence Morrissette collected a single, double and scored a run. Caitlin Salmonsen drove in a run and scored as well. Avani Cole added two hits and scored a run.
In the circle for the Blue Devils, Jocelyn Kolb pitched a complete game. She fanned eight batters and allowed three hits and two earned runs.
“It was a great team win and just a great way to start the season,” Hannon said.
For Weedsport (0-1), Zoyee Newton singled, knocked in a couple of runs and was hit by a pitch. Morgan Flask had a hit and scored twice.
“It was a tough game,” Hannon said. “Weedsport played well. It was cold and windy.”
Cato-Meridian takes on Jordan-Elbridge at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Weedsport’s next game is the same date and time, and it faces Bishop Grimes.
