Seven Corpus Christi ISD schools to be demolished, one building spared
Corpus Christi ISD will demolish Fannin, Kostoryz, Sanders and Travis elementary schools and Browne and Martin middle schools, all campuses that were closed by the district ahead of the 2026-27 school year. Haas Middle School, which was also closed, will serve as the new instructional resource center. The district's former Corpus Christi ISD Instructional Resource Center, which was housed in the former Cunningham Middle School, will also be demolished. The fate of the campuses was determined by the Corpus Christi Independent School District school board Aug. 10. The demolitions are in line with the district's approach to other vacant school buildings , including the old Carroll High School campus. Ahead of the school board vote, trustee Mary Bell expressed reluctance to tear down the buildings, asking whether gyms could be left standing and offered to the community for use. "Stand-alone buildings who are vacant become invitations [for] lots of broken windows, for people getting into the building," Superintendent Roland Hernandez said. The old Carroll High School attracted intruders and vandals, according to previous school board discussions. Hernandez added that the district had closed the campuses for financial reasons, in order to save on reduced air conditioning, electric and maintenance costs.

Flour Bluff ISD, too big for extra state funds, asks for lawmaker help
To keep teachers in the classroom, Texas lawmakers approved retention allotments. But not every teacher received the same amount. Teachers in the West Oso, Tuloso-Midway, Calallen and London school districts received $4,000 or $8,000, depending on their years of experience. But just a few miles away, teachers employed by the Flour Bluff and Corpus Christi school districts were only offered $2,500 to $5,000. This is because the Texas Retention Allotment created by House Bill 2 offers extra dollars to teachers in school systems with fewer than 5,000 enrolled students. The Corpus Christi Independent School District is far from the threshold, but the Flour Bluff Independent School District only missed out on higher pay for teachers by less than 400 students. Educators in South Texas: Retired educators aim to influence voter turnout, Texas school policy Flour Bluff ISD Superintendent Chris Steinbruck believes this isn’t fair. Technically, there is a way Flour Bluff schools could get down below the 5,000-student line, but it isn’t an option the district is willing to consider. To secure higher allotments for its teachers, Flour Bluff ISD would have to abandon some of its students. Though the district enrolled 5,378 students last year, less than 4,500 actually
