TROY (WWJ) – A man is awaiting possible charges for speeding away from a traffic stop after he was caught going over 100 mph in Troy over Memorial Day weekend.

It all happened shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday, May 26 when the 42-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods man was pulled over on northbound I-75 near Long Lake Road.

He admitted to officers that he was going 104 mph prior to seeing the patrol car. Officers noted he was slurring his words while they were speaking to him.

While the officer was confirming the driver’s identity in his patrol car, the driver fled the scene of the traffic stop at a high rate of speed, according to police.

Officers pursued the driver with their emergency lights and sirens activated, but cut the chase short as the driver continued to drive recklessly.

When officers exited the freeway at Adams Road they saw a Mustang parked in the “Park and Ride” parking lot at the end of the ramp. When officers pulled up, they noticed it was the same car from the traffic stop and the suspect was still in the driver’s seat.

He was arrested for fleeing and eluding. Officers noticed he smelled of liquor and when they searched the car, they found an empty pint bottle in the trunk.

The driver was taken to the Troy Police Lock-Up facility, where he failed several sobriety tests and refused to submit to a preliminary breath test. Authorities performed a chemical blood test and the case was turned over to the Detective Bureau for appropriate warrants.

The man’s name has not been released, pending prosecutor review.
