Johnson County Mexican restaurant closes last location after 13 years

After serving the Kansas City area for 13 years, a Mexican-style taco concept has closed its second and last location. Taco Republic closed its Prairie Village location Wednesday at 4100 W. 83rd St., marking the end of its brick-and-mortar era. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making Taco Republic so special. We hope to see you before we say goodbye to our Prairie Village location,” the restaurant announced Thursday. It promised to continue catering, so its taco truck will still pop up around the metro. The “not-your-standard Mexican restaurant,” its website calls itself, started in 2013 at Mission and County Line Roads in Kansas City, Kansas, where Joe’s Next Door now lives. In 2019, restaurateur Whitney VinZant took over Taco Republic and added it to his growing portfolio of concepts in the metro, which now includes Louie’s Wine Dive, Gram & Dun, Louie’s Reserve (formerly Cafe Trio) and BrewTop. Taco Republic opened a second location in 2021 in Prairie Village’s Corinth Square. It neighbored Johnny’s Tavern, Modern Market Eatery and BRGR (also a VinZant concept). Happy Halloween, Kansas City. Here are your weekly frightful violations at Kansas City-area restaurants — from leaky sinks to food kept in refrigerators longer than the health code says. Health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City-area restaurants last week. Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public. In Kansas City and Independence, each city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better. Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly after. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. On Friday nights, the dining hall at Grace United Methodist Church transforms into The Table, where more than 200 diners have recently packed the room for chef and pastor Changhyun Kim’s deeply comforting Korean cooking. This fall, come hungry for steaming bowls of gomtang, Kim’s slow-simmered beef soup, along with vegan sundubu tofu stew, fiery jjamppong sundubu (seafood stew), fragrant perilla oil sundubu and handmade Korean mandu (dumplings). You’ll find The Table at 11485 South Ridgeview Road in Olathe, but consider this your insider tip: they only serve on Friday nights, with seatings between 5–8 p.m., so be sure to make reservations before you go.

Wyandotte County voters will find something new at the polls on Election Day: DJs

Ben Rich is an electrical engineer by day. On the side he deejays at proms, weddings, concerts, comedy shows, holiday parties, bar mitzvahs and fundraisers around Kansas City. On Election Day, you’ll find him outside two polling places in Wyandotte County, where he lives, playing music for voters — something he’s never done in his 17 years as a DJ. He’ll start the day at 7 a.m. outside Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. He expects long lines. But if some people aren’t planning to vote, he hopes the promise of good music will help draw them. “I know sometimes we can have long lines or people are getting off of work or finding the time of day to get to the polls,” said Rich. “Why not bring a vibe and some music and good tunes to the community and the process while they’re doing that … “It gives me an opportunity to be a part of the community that I was raised in, but also help with voter turnout, to encourage people to be out.” Rich is one of a handful of Kansas City DJs who will play music at WyCo polling places on Tuesday.
