AT SELECT LIBRARIES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE COMMITMENT TO SERVE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH TO STUDENTS OUT OF SCHOOL FOR THE SUMMER HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR SOME TIME NOW. WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SERVE OUR KIDS YEAR ROUND, WHETHER SCHOOLS IN OR OUT. SO THIS GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A NUTRITIOUS, HEALTHY MEAL EVERY DAY THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, ANY OF THE COUNTY’S MORE THAN 100,000 STUDENTS WHO ARE 18 YEARS OLD AND YOUNGER CAN SHOW UP AT 11 PUBLIC LIBRARIES FOR BREAKFAST AND LUNCH. THEY’LL BE ABLE TO GET LUNCHES ONLY AT 13 SCHOOL BUILDINGS. UNLIKE YEARS PAST, STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THOSE MEALS HOME ON THE SCHOOL SITES. WE DO HAVE TO GO INTO THE SCHOOL AND CONSUME THE MEAL ON SITE THIS YEAR, WHICH IS A CHANGE FROM LAST YEAR. SO DURING COVID, FAMILIES WERE ABLE TO COME TO THE SCHOOL, PICK UP THE MEAL AND TAKE IT HOME. AND NOW WE REVERTED BACK TO THE ORIGINAL PLANS BEFORE COVID COUNTY SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM IS GETTING SUPPORT FROM THE DISTRICT’S TEACHERS ASSOCIATION. MANY EDUCATORS HAVE ALREADY PROVIDED FOOD FOR THEIR STUDENTS OVER THE YEARS, IN ADDITION TO OTHER SUPPLIES AND CLOTHING. AS WELL. SO TO KNOW THAT THESE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO GO SOMEWHERE FOR A MEAL TWICE A DAY IN THE SUMMER IS IT’S BENEFICIAL. IT’S GOING TO REALLY HELP OUR STUDENTS. FREE MEALS WILL BE SERVED UP UNTIL AUGUST 18TH, TEN DAYS BEFORE STUDENTS HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL. NOW, BEYOND THE SUMMER, BALTIMORE COUNTY WILL START OFFERING FREE MEALS TO ALL STUDENTS BEGINNING IN THE FALL, REGARDLESS OF THEIR INCOME STATUS. IN LOCK RAVEN IN BALTIMORE COUN

With summer break just weeks away, Baltimore County Public Schools have already turned its attention toward feeding thousands of students in need of a daily meal.Officials have been preparing for some time to fulfill the district's commitment to serve breakfast and lunch to students over the summer. The free meals will be available at select libraries and public schools beginning the first week after classes end for students in Baltimore County."We need to be able to serve our kids year-round, whether schools are in or out. So, this gives them the opportunity to have a nutritious, healthy meal every day throughout the summer," said Jaime Hetzler, director of the district's Office of Food and Nutrition Services.Any of the county's more than 100,000 students who are 18 and younger can go to 13 school buildings for breakfast and lunch, or to 11 public libraries for lunch. Unlike years past, students will not be able to take the meals home."On the school sites, we do have to go into the school and consume the meal on site this year, which is a change from last year. During COVID, families were able to pick up the meal and take it home. Now, we've reverted back to the original plan before COVID," Hetzler said.The county's summer meals program is getting support from the district's teachers association."Many educators have already provided food for their students over the years, in addition to other supplies and clothing, as well so to know that these students will able to go to somewhere for a meal twice a day in the summer, it's going to really help our students," said Cindy Sexton, president of the Teachers Association of Baltimore County.The free meals will served until Aug. 18, which is 10 days before students head back to school.Beyond the summer, Baltimore County will start offering free meals to all students beginning in the fall regardless of their income status.
