The Flood of 1916, one of North Carolina’s deadliest natural disasters, had an unexpected impact beyond its destruction.

This catastrophic event, which devastated the Catawba Basin also played a peculiar role in the enduring mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights.

The ghostly orbs, spotted for over a century on Brown Mountain in the Blue Ridge, flickered persistently even as the flood wiped out electricity and modern conveniences across the region.

Before the flood, the U.S. Geological Survey in 1913 attributed the lights to auto and locomotive headlights, a theory washed away by the storm's destruction. Even in the de-electrified aftermath, people continued to report the eerie lights dancing along the mountainside.

The origins of the Brown Mountain Lights are steeped in folklore. Some legends trace them back to Cherokee ghost stories, while a 1771 European explorer speculated they were caused by “nitrous vapors.” The lights remain a topic of fascination, even inspiring bluegrass songs, an episode of "The X-Files," and outlandish tales of alien encounters.

Despite scientific efforts, including experiments by Appalachian State University’s Dan Caton, the phenomenon remains unsolved. With cameras trained on the mountain, the lights have become elusive, but hope lingers that they will soon reappear, adding to the mystery of these enduring, unexplained illuminations in North Carolina’s rugged highlands.

What do you think? Could these lights be a natural phenomenon or something more otherworldly? Share your thoughts!
