Media outlets often publish articles about the richest cities in each state, showing off the location’s biggest tourist attractions, fanciest neighborhoods, or most sparkling amenities, like community theaters, parks, and schools.

It’s not often we hear about the areas within a state where residents face significant economic challenges compared to nearby communities, or where many live below the poverty line.

Yet, every state has at least one such region, and North Carolina is no exception—there is one city in particular that stands out.

To determine the poorest big city in North Carolina, GOBankingRates analyzed data about the median household income, the percentage of the population living below the poverty level, and the per capita income, as sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

The findings have been revealed, and the community with the highest poverty rate in the state is Concord, where 7.52% of its residents live below the poverty line.

Concord, North Carolina, a city of over 105,000 residents, holds the title of the state's poorest big city. Despite a median household income of $83,480, Concord sees 7.52% of its population living below the poverty level, with a per capita income of $39,148.

Poverty impacts communities in various ways, affecting access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities. Addressing these disparities is essential to improving the overall quality of life in cities like Concord.

Solutions such as expanding affordable housing, investing in local businesses, and strengthening social services can play a role in helping residents escape poverty.

What are your thoughts on poverty and its impact on communities like Concord? How can society create more opportunities for those in need? Share your insights below.
