Looking for a laid-back summer getaway? North Carolina has you covered with its charming small towns, perfect for a long weekend escape.

Southern Living recently recognized our state by including four North Carolina towns in their list of "The 15 Most Adorable Small Towns for a Summer Getaway."

These towns are known for their walkable, charming downtowns, old-fashioned ice cream parlors, and friendly locals. Three of the featured towns are nestled in the mountains, offering a cooler alternative to the beach and a break from the summer heat.

Here are the four North Carolina towns Southern Living recommends:

    1. Boone, NC:

    2. Black Mountain, NC:

Just 25 minutes from Asheville, this town boasts a lively downtown with art galleries, shops, and quaint restaurants.

    3. Mt. Airy, NC:

Known as Mayberry, this town offers a nostalgic feel with live bluegrass music, local wine, and a slower pace.

    4. Brevard, NC:

Famous as the "Land of Waterfalls," Brevard is a nature lover's paradise with 250 waterfalls, live music, and great dining options.

These towns are perfect for your next North Carolina adventure!

Boone is a college town. That’s it. If you want to enjoy the beauty and quiet of the mountains I’d suggest try one of the smaller towns in the area.

I lived in Boone 8 years. It was about 5 years too long lol. Very overrated. Yes some beautiful sights but restaurants are mediocre. Housing is really expensive even for some crappy looking place. The university administration over the last 10 years or so insisted on growing the unemployment which basically ruined the town. So it's not peaceful by a long shot when you have 15,000 college students packed into a small area. Most of the people working at the university have to work there as a last resort and then drag their family along. The result is sort of unhappy people living in a limited town.
